Cardboard Bale Weight and Value: A Guide

Understanding cardboard bale weight and value helps you plan your recycling system and estimate potential rebates. While exact numbers vary based on equipment and material condition, here's a practical guide to what you can expect when baling cardboard commercially.

Typical Bale Weights

A standard vertical baler typically produces cardboard bales weighing between 800 and 1,500 pounds, depending on the baler size and compression force. Horizontal balers produce larger bales that can weigh 1,000 to 2,000+ pounds. The denser the bale, the more efficient your storage and hauling.

How Many Boxes Per Bale

A typical 1,000-pound cardboard bale might contain the equivalent of 200–400 broken-down boxes, depending on box size and wall thickness. In loose form, those same boxes would fill a significant portion of a dumpster, illustrating why baling is so effective at reducing volume. See materials we recycle for what else you can bale.

Commodity Value

Baled cardboard (OCC) has commodity value that fluctuates with market conditions. Pricing is typically quoted per ton, and clean, dry bales command the best rates. RME tracks market pricing and passes value back through rebates. The exact value depends on current markets, bale quality, and volume.

Maximizing Value

To maximize your cardboard bale value: keep it dry, remove contaminants (plastic, foam, food), break down boxes fully before baling, and store bales under cover. RME covers these best practices during setup. See how our system works and our success stories for real-world examples.
