Shrink Wrap Recycling for Distribution Centers

Shrink Wrap Recycling for Distribution Centers

Shrink wrap is everywhere in distribution centers. Every pallet that arrives is wrapped in it, and every shipment that goes out may need more. It's lightweight, bulky, and notoriously difficult to manage in traditional waste streams, it tangles, blows around, and fills dumpsters without adding weight.

But shrink wrap (typically low-density polyethylene, or LDPE) is fully recyclable when baled properly. RME helps DCs bale shrink wrap alongside other plastic film as part of our materials we recycle program.

The Volume Problem

A single distribution center can generate hundreds of pounds of shrink wrap weekly. In loose form, that material fills multiple dumpsters. Baled, it compresses into dense, manageable bales that store compactly and have real commodity value. The volume reduction is dramatic, often 10:1 or better.

Keeping It Clean

The value of baled shrink wrap depends on cleanliness. Remove labels, tape, and contaminants. Keep the film separate from cardboard and other materials. Avoid mixing in food-contaminated or biodegradable films, which can ruin an entire bale.

The Plastic Film Recycling organization provides guidance on acceptable film grades and bale specifications.

Storage and Pickup

Baled shrink wrap should be stored under cover to prevent UV degradation, which reduces its value. RME picks up bales on demand when you have enough volume. See how our system works for how on-demand pickup works.
