Recycling for Distribution Centers at Scale

Recycling for Distribution Centers at Scale

Large distribution centers are among the highest-volume recyclable generators in any sector. Between inbound pallets wrapped in stretch film, cardboard packaging from received goods, and outbound shipping materials, a major DC can generate tons of recyclable material weekly. At that scale, the difference between efficient and inefficient recycling is enormous, both in cost and in recovery value.

RME works with large distribution centers as part of our sectors we serve coverage, designing systems that handle DC-scale volumes.

The DC Material Profile

Distribution centers primarily generate cardboard (from received shipments) and plastic film (stretch wrap from pallets). Both are highly baleable and have commodity value. A large DC might generate several tons of each monthly. In loose form, that material requires extensive dumpster capacity and frequent pickups. Baled, it becomes compact, stored bales picked up on demand. See materials we recycle for the full range.

Equipment for DC Scale

At distribution-center volumes, vertical balers may not keep up. Horizontal balers, possibly with conveyor feeding and auto-tie systems, are often the right choice. These handle continuous high-volume baling with minimal labor. RME assesses your volume and recommends appropriately scaled equipment. See how our system works for the assessment process.

Material Handling Flow

At scale, material handling flow becomes critical. Cardboard and film need to be separated at the point of generation, typically at receiving, and routed to the baler efficiently. Poor flow design creates labor inefficiency and contamination. RME helps design flows that make separation and baling natural parts of your DC operations.

The Financial Impact at Scale

At DC volumes, the savings from baling are substantial. A center spending $3,000+ monthly on waste can see dramatic reductions through eliminated dumpsters, reduced pickups, and rebate revenue. See our success stories for large-scale results.
