Commercial Recycling Baler Types Explained

Choosing the right baler is the foundation of an efficient commercial recycling system. The wrong baler means wasted labor, insufficient compaction, or equipment that can't keep up with your volume. RME helps businesses select the right equipment as part of our how our system works process, but here's a quick overview of the main types.

Vertical Balers

Vertical balers are the most common choice for small to mid-volume operations. Material is loaded from the front or top, and a vertical platen compresses it downward. They're affordable, compact, and ideal for retail stores, small warehouses, schools, and offices generating moderate cardboard or plastic volumes. Most produce bales weighing 500–1,500 pounds.

Horizontal Balers

Horizontal balers handle higher volumes and are designed for continuous operation. Material feeds in horizontally, and the baler can often run with conveyor or automated feeding systems. These are suited for manufacturing plants, large distribution centers, and high-volume recyclers. They produce larger, heavier bales and require more space and power.

Auto-Tie Balers

Auto-tie balers automatically wire or strap bales, reducing labor and enabling unattended operation. They're typically horizontal balers used in high-volume settings where manual tying would be a bottleneck. For operations generating dozens of bales weekly, auto-tie systems pay for themselves in labor savings.

The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) provides specifications and standards for recycled material bales, which guide equipment selection.

How to Choose

The right baler depends on your material types, daily volume, available space, and labor capacity. RME assesses all of these during your onsite evaluation. See materials we recycle for what you'll be baling, and schedule a free onsite assessment to get a personalized recommendation.
